HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The West Edge Factory, the Appalachian Reuse Hub and the Huntington Arts Collective and Studios have come up with a way to reuse items that might normally end up in the trash, in landfills or illegal dumps.
The concept is simple. From 5-9 p.m. today, March 20, the West Edge Factory arts hub and music venue will become the place to bring usable items that folks may want to part with as a part of their spring cleaning activities.
During the Spring Cleaning for Creative Reuse: Eco Swap and Collection event, at the factory at 1040 Vernon St. in Huntington, the items will be available for swapping. Folks can also drop by and claim items they might use even if they havenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t brought anything with them, or folks can drop off items and then go about their business.
The purpose of the event is to get items into the hands of people who can use them without adding to the trash heap.
Baleigh Epperly is the associate director of creative reuse for the Coalfield Development organization in the Tri-State.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIt is kind of like a regular swap meet. This is a chance to do a bit of spring cleaning and then gather anything from clothes to books, both bigger and smaller items, and bring them to the West Edge factory where we will have many tables set up,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Epperly said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe are not calling for furniture, but things like working lamps and such will be fine to bring in.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThen, we will help folks work through the swap process,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ she added. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe allow folks to come and do a walk through without bringing anything to the event and if you see something you want, by all means, you are welcome to take it, and some folks want to drop off items and not take anything, and we are open to all of it.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Swapping can be the fun part of events like this, but the organizers will not turn anyone away as the whole goal is to find a new home for the items.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe are also doing a collection event on Thursday for used arts and crafts materials and art supplies,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Epperly said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThose items will be used as a part of our Appalachian Reuse Hub free community art workshops, where up-cycling comes in handy. So, if folks have any used paint, brushes, magazines, ribbon or basically anything that someone could use in an arts and crafts environment, please bring it in and drop it off as it will be put to great use.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
This year, for the first time, the Appalachian Reuse Hub is working with another organization for this Spring Cleaning Eco Swap ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” the Huntington Arts Collective and Studios.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe will be splitting up the arts and crafts materials that we get with them,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Epperly said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThose folks will help us with the Eco Swap while at the same time, (they) will host two interactive activity stations tonight with one being a quilt workshop, where folks can learn some sewing basics, making some quilt triangles from reusable materials that will eventually be used to make a bigger community quilt. They will also use the second workstation to guide folks to make stuffed animals.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Epperly said the event will also feature ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œa free-for-all collage stationÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ for all visitors.
