RETIRED: Congratulations to Linda Shipley Salem, a 1980 Barboursville High School graduate, who retired this week from Valley Health Systems Inc., after 40 years of service. Shipley received her undergraduate degree from Marshall University in 1985 and her graduate degrees, MSN FNP, in 1993. From her beginnings as a registered nurse at the Valley Health Youth Center in 1985 to her role as a family nurse practitioner in Gallipolis Ferry and Apple Grove, Shipley has dedicated her career to serving others through nursing. In retirement, Linda plans to volunteer within the community, and she and her husband, Ted, plan to hang out at their farm in Mason County. She says that she is excited to spread her wings and to embrace this new adventure in her life.
THINGS TO DO: Several activities are happening in Barboursville this weekend. The Barboursville Rotary Club is having a pancake breakfast fundraiser — pancakes, sausage, coffee and juice — at the Barboursville Senior Center, 721 Central Ave., from 8-11 a.m. on Saturday, May 10. Cost is $5 per person. Proceeds will go to Barboursville Rotary charities. A Mother’s Day Tea will be held at the Village House Venue on Central Avenue with two time sittings, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.; tickets are $12. This is hosted by the Village of Barboursville Convention and Visitors Bureau. The annual Vineyard in the Village event will be held from 5-6 p.m. for the VIP session and 6-9 p.m. for the general admission session. MUSICUM: The Cabell Midland High School Collegium musicum, under the direction of Ed Harkless, presents its 17th Annual Collegium musicum Experience on Friday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in the schoolÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s auditorium. The 24 members of the Collegium musicum have spent much of the semester working on music for the show. The ensemble will perform works by Bach, Handel, Bruckner and Aguilar and will sing in English, Latin, Spanish, German, and Russian. Several solos/duets will be performed with works from ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œMomma Mia,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Miracle Music, Lana Lel Ray, Kahlid, and others. This year, all Collegium musicum alumni not only have a special invitation to attend and to join in the traditional closer, ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œOld Irish Blessing,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ but also to remember their time in the group and to celebrate Mr. HarklessÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ retirement.
‘QUEEN’: This week, the Huntington Symphony Orchestra announced that the 2025 Summer Picnic with the Pops will kick off in the Barboursville Park Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. June 7 with the music of Queen. SCHOLAR: Congratulations to Claire Johnson, a graduating senior from Huntington High School, who is one of the seven students selected as Society of Yeager Scholars for the class of 2029 at Marshall University. The other six students who were selected are Addie Poling from Hurricane High School; Aadie Rautela from Winfield High School; Anna Toledo from Nitro High School; Alycen Hurst from Russell (Kentucky) High School; Walter Fowble from Vinton, Ohio; and Zoe Hughes from Hampton, Virginia.
PERFECT: Congratulations to Cabell Midland High School student Gabriella Robertson, who received a perfect score on her ACT test. The ACT is a standardized test used for college admission in the United States and covers four academic skills that are individually scored on a scale from 1-36. A 36 is the rarest score of all. Just .22% of all test takers earn a perfect ACT score.
DINNER: Olive Missionary Baptist Church, 2508 Merritts Creek Road, Huntington, offers a free community dinner on Friday, May 9, from 5-6 p.m. The menu is lasagna, garlic bread, and dessert. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy a free dinner, which may be eaten in or taken out.
BREAKFAST: The VFW Post 6878 in Proctorville, Ohio, will have its monthly breakfast on Saturday, May 10, from 8-10 a.m. The menu includes fried or scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, biscuits and gravy, toast, fried apples, coffee, milk, and orange juice. Adult cost is $10 and $5 for children who are 10 years old and under. Everyone is welcome and to-go meals are available. The Auxiliary will also have a bake sale.
CHORUS: The ThunderTones Barbershop Chorus offers ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œA Cappella in the ParkÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ on Saturday, May 10, from 12-2 p.m. in Ritter Park, Huntington.
