BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Susan Glasby may have saved her best performance for last.
Glasby outlasted Savannah Hawkins through five sudden-death playoff holes on Tuesday at Bridgeport Country Club to capture her third straight West Virginia WomenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Amateur championship in what she said would be her final tournament in the state before attempting a professional career.
The Australia native sank a birdie on the fifth playoff hole to claim the 101st West Virginia WomenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Amateur over Hawkins after the two battled through 18 regulation holes in TuesdayÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s third round to finish at 7-over par.
To break the tie, the West Virginia Golf Association had the two women play the ninth hole twice before moving to the 10th hole for the third sudden-death playoff hole, then back to No. 9 for the final two.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIn a playoff, you kind of approach it like every shot is your last shot,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Glasby said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThat is how you have to look at it.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Now, Glasby wants to focus on competing at the U.S. WomenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Amateur Golf Championship on Aug. 2 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, then try to play professionally.
Hawkins, a Marshall University golf commit from Hurricane, wasnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t about to let Glasby ride off into the sunset without a challenge.
At one point on the back nine of the tournamentÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s third round, Hawkins found herself trailing not only Glasby, but Emily Holzopfel.
Holzopfel got an eagle on the ninth hole in regulation to draw even with Glasby.
A birdie on the 13th hole completed HawkinsÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ comeback from a three-stroke deficit and tied her with Glasby, who parred the hole.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThat was a momentum-shifter,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hawkins said.
Holzopfel matched Glasby and Hawkins stroke for stroke through much of the front nine, and even had the lead in the early going, but began to fade late on the back nine. The Rayland, Ohio, resident finished the day at 10-over-par, three strokes from a tie for the lead.
Hawkins trailed by three strokes with MiltonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Taylor Sargent, playing in the threesome just ahead of Glasby, Holzopfel and Hawkins ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” the leaders for much of the three-day tournament.
As both Sargent and Holzopfel began to fall back from the two frontrunners, Hawkins and Glasby began separating themselves from the pack, although not from each other.
Through the remaining five holes, Hawkins and Glasby stayed tied.
On the fifth playoff hole, the separation finally came.
Coming off the tee, Hawkins found the trees along the fairway to her right. Then she gambled.
Hawkins tried an aggressive shot out of the trees that found the rough on the left side, about 20 yards past the green.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œEverything on the fairway kicks to the right,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hawkins said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI just decided I was going to play for a birdie. It was the fifth playoff hole.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
While she managed to sink a putt for par, Glasby was set up for the final putt from four feet away that capped her tournament.
Hawkins, Glasby said, ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œput on a show.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Aside from the runner-up trophy, Hawkins also took home the trophy for the lowest junior score, shooting a 223 over the course of the tournament. Hawkins shot an even-par 72 for the third round.
Sargent finished with a 77 for TuesdayÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s round to finish the tournament 13-over par. Cathleen Wong took fifth at 22-over.
Wong was followed by Sara Veara (26-over), Aubrey Kerr (31-over) and Kimberly Eaton (33-over), who rounded out the leaderboard.
