CINCINNATI - The Cincinnati Reds' search for a new center fielder ended in the bullpen.

Pitcher Michael Lorenzen likely won't be tabbed to start in center field, but the strong-armed right-hander will be called upon as a defensive replacement there on occasion, as he was Thursday when he played two innings in Cincinnati's 5-3 Opening Day victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

HUNTINGTON - The last 30 days have been tough on former Marshall University baseball players.

Two of the better pitchers ever at Marshall, Aaron Blair of the Atlanta Braves and Kevin Shackelford of the Cincinnati Reds, were released after suffering injuries. Another, Dan Straily of the Miami Marlins, was suspended after intentionally hitting San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey with a pitch.
