As he cast a critical vote Tuesday for deeply consequential legislation projected to cost lower-income West Virginians, the Mountain StateÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s junior senator was saddled with a family business debt already costing the state hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Republican U.S. Sen. Jim JusticeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Bluestone Coal Corp. owes the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection $916,273 in delinquent fines for 133 DEP disciplinary actions spanning September 2019 to April 2025, according to DEP data obtained by the Gazette-Mail.
