HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District celebrated Earth Day with its annual ceremony and WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington Memorial Tree Dedication at the Ritter Park Fountain on Tuesday.
Southside Elementary School students, local residents, members of the WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington, and representatives from the city and Huntington Stormwater Utility attended the event to highlight the importance of taking care of the earth.
GHPRD Executive Director Kathy McKenna said the park district hosts the ceremony to continue bringing awareness of the planet and the work that needs done to maintain it.
Mary Madsen, president of the WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington, said giving back to the community in this way is important to all club members.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œItÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s impactful because the entire city uses this park, so this is on behalf of the whole city and in addition to the things that we do for individual organizations,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Madsen said.
Trees are crucial for a healthy environment and play vital roles in air and water purification while also supporting biodiversity and helping to combat climate change.
The WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington does community projects that may beautify the town or help local organizations or nonprofits. The WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club has dedicated 19 sunset maple trees from Lavalette Landscaping run by Mark Springer. The park board plants the trees and sells plaques for the trees. Madsen said all of the trees are still alive.
The Thundertones, a community singing group, performed ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œCountry RoadsÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ and engaged the crowd to sing ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œGod Bless America.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Cabell County Schools dedicated a memorial bench for former Huntington High School Cross Country Coach Neil Ferguson. The bench is across from 11th Street.
Justin Cox, cross country coach at Huntington High School, said the bench dedication is fitting as Ritter Park was the birthplace of cross country in West Virginia. The first recorded cross country meet in the state happened in Ritter Park in 1953 with Huntington High competing against Gallipolis Academy. The cross country team had meets years after and to this day practices in the park.
After the ceremony, students snacked on ice cream and did activities while others traveled to the newest tree along the WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington Memorial Tree line on ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Way.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ A poem called ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œTreeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ was read before the dedication.
The WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Club of Huntington has about 130 members. The club has been in existence since 1898.
