Carrico player of the week
MORGANTOWN ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Former Ironton High School linebacker Reid Carrico of West Virginia University was named the Big XII co-defensive player of the week Monday, sharing the honor with ArizonaÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Genesis Smith.
Carrico made a career-high 16 tackles in a 49-35 loss to Baylor Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium. The total was the most since Oct. 18, 2017 when David Long Jr. made 18 stops against Oklahoma State.
Rio Grande changes football coaches
RIO GRANDE, Ohio ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The University of Rio Grande football team hasnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t yet played a snap but already is on its second head coach.
The RedStorm announced Friday it was replacing Quincy Wilson with defensive coordinator Mark Thurston. The schoolÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s press release announcing the change revealed it wonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œprovide details on the separationÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ to respect the privacy of all parties.
Rio Grande hired Wilson, a former West Virginia University standout running back, June 11 to lead the program, which begins play in 2025.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œOur focus remains on supporting out athletes and continue moving forward with the launch of football next fall,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ URG president Ryan Smith said.
Thurston, a native of Miami, also played at WVU where he was a linebacker. He has served as an assistant at Iowa State, Toledo, Norfolk State and Lake Erie. Thurston also coached at Miami Norland High School.
The RedStorm is set to play in the NAIA Appalachian Athletic Conference.
