MORGANTOWN ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Unlike West VirginiaÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s football and menÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s basketball programs, the MountaineersÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ womenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s basketball team doesnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t have to completely rebuild its roster this coming season.
Admittedly coach Mark Kellogg, whose squads posted identical 25-8 records in each of his first two seasons at WVU, has some big shoes to fill this coming year. He must replace three graduated starters in JJ Quinerly (20.4 points and 3.0 steals per game), Kyah Watson (5.9 points and 7.6 rebounds per game) and Kylee Blacksten (6.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game), but five members of last seasonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s NCAA Tournament qualifier do return.
Among those are senior-to-be point guard Jordan Harrison (13.7 points and 2.6 assists per game), senior-to-be guard Sydney Shaw (11.4 points and 2.1 3-pointers per game) and sophomore-to-be forward Jordan Thomas (6.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game), as well as senior-to-be guard Sydney Woodley (3.9 points and 1.7 steals per game) and junior-to-be forward Celia Riviere (3.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game).
To these five returnees, Kellogg has already added six newcomers, with a couple more likely to come.
WVU signed one high school prospect in November in 5-foot-11 guard Madie Parrish from Mason, Ohio. Thus far this spring, the Mountaineers have gotten commitments from five transfers ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” 5-foot-8 junior guard Gia Cooke from Houston, 5-foot-10 junior guard Loghan Johnson from Texas Tech, 6-foot-2 junior forward Riley Makalusky from Butler, 6-foot-1 junior forward Carter McCray from Wisconsin and 6-foot-1 senior forward Kierra Wheeler from Norfolk State.
A native of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, Cooke spent the first two years of her college career (taking a medical redshirt in one of them) at Maryland before transferring to Houston for the 2024-25 season. She was the CougarsÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ second-leading scorer, averaging 12.4 points per game.
A native of Houston, Johnson averaged 5.0 points per game in two seasons at Texas Tech before transferring to WVU this spring.
Riley spent the past two years at Butler, earning Big East all-freshman honors in 2023-24 (6.7 points per game while making 46.1% of her 77 3-pointers) and then averaging 8.1 points and 2.8 rebounds this past season.
A native of Oberlin, Ohio, McCray was a starter as a freshman at Northern Kentucky in 2023-24, where she averaged a double-double (15.7 points and 11.2 rebounds per game). She then transferred to Wisconsin for last season, averaging 10.6 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the Badgers.
A native of Minneapolis, Wheeler began her college career at Daytona State (Florida) Community College before playing for Norfolk State the past three seasons. A three-year member of the MEAC all-defensive team, Wheeler averaged 15.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game last season.
The only freshman on the MountaineersÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ 2025-26 roster, Parrish comes to West Virginia with high credentials. She was a top-100 national prospect according to ESPN and averaged 17.3 points and 2.5 steals per game as a senior.
