Former Marshall basketball players Mikel Beyers and Jarrod West will be playing in the TBT, but they will not be playing for Herd That.
West will instead play for Best Virginia, the WVU alumni-based squad, for his father Jarrod West Sr., who will be head coach. West Jr. played collegiately at both Marshall and Louisville and has played for Herd That in recent renditions of the TBT.
West Sr. was the first-ever Best Virginia head coach when it made its first appearance back in 2019. He also is a long-time coach of Notre Dame high school in Clarksburg where the younger Jarrod played and won a state title.
West Sr. played college basketball at West Virginia from 1994-1998 and averaged 10.6 points per game as a senior. He also hit a buzzer-beater to send the Mountaineers to the Sweet 16.
West Jr. last played professionally for KK Bonsa Sarajevo, where he was named the Playoffs MVP of the Bosnian Basketball league after his team won the title.
Some other familiar faces currently listed on the Best Virginia Roster include Jermaine Haley Jr., John Flowers, Wesley Harris, Kedrian Johnson and Erik Stevenson ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” all former WVU players.
As for Beyers, he will be playing for the Boston vs. Cancer team that intends to raise awareness and money for cancer causes.
As a senior in 2021, Beyers played in all 22 of MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s games. He had three starts and averaged 9.4 points and 3.4 rebounds with 18 blocks and 14 steals.
As for Herd That, the current roster has the following former Marshall players: Jon Elmore, Rondale Watson, Ryan Taylor and Stevie Browning. Joining the team are familiar TBT faces Jacorey Williams, Derek Cooke Jr., Xavier Munford and JP Tokoto.
Announcements for brackets and broadcasts are expected early next week. A recent video featuring alumni like Elmore, Obinna Anochili-Killen, Taevion Kinsey, Mikal Dawson and Browning playing against the current Herd in practice was posted on MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s social media pages last week, but no further roster announcements have been made at the time of writing.
Elmore has been given the fourth-best odds for the MVP award at +450. Former NBA players Montrezl Harrell (+350) and Willia Cauley-Stein (+400) join Buddy Boeheim (+400) as the only players above him.
The TBT is slated to run from July 18 to August 3 with a regional tournament being played in Charleston.
