MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Aislynn Hayes (10) drives toward the basket against Old Dominion on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington.
HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s victory over Old Dominion Thursday was a tale of two lines.
The Thundering Herd (8-18 overall, 3-10 Sun Belt Conference) made its shots from the foul line and defended the 3-point arc well in a 73-70 triumph in womenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s college basketball at Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall hit 19 of 27 free throws, with Aislynn Hayes sinking all 11 of her attempts, and limited the Monarchs (14-12, 6-7) to 3-of-14 shooting from 3-point range.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI thought we executed really well in overtime, even the plays leading up to overtime,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ MU coach Juli Fulks said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œMore importantly, in the fourth quarter we made free throws and in overtime were 8 for 10 to secure the game. I was really proud of the effort.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
On Jan. 11, ODU made 12 of 25 shots beyond the arc in an 80-75 victory in Norfolk, Virginia. Marshall performed better Thursday.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œLast time we played them we gave up way too many threes,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Fulks said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œEven when we switched to man we gave up too many threes. We really focused on that ever since then. They only hit three and thatÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s a testament to our commitment on defending the 3-point line, then rebound.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
The Herd made 8 of 10 foul shots in overtime, a period in which it never trailed.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThe biggest thing weÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve been trying to stress is being efficient on offense in the second half and getting defensive boards,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Fulks said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe hit all those numbers in the second half.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
The contest was one of wild swings. Marshall led by nine points early, trailed 28-25 at halftime and fell behind 11 in in the third quarter. The HerdÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s success early came because it succeeded driving to the basket.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe knew because of the way they defend, we were going to get to the rim,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Fulks said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe got to the rim and one of the things I was really proud of is we werenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t settling for low-quality shots when we knew we could be open at the rim. We got a bunch of reversals. Ais and C.C. (Mays) and Maddie (Kellione) and (Timberlynn Yeast), everybody got to the rim early, which drove them to the zone. Then it took a couple of minutes to get our bearings.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Hayes scored 29 points, Mays 15 and Kellione 14.
The Herd hopes for similar success at 1 p.m. Saturday when it entertains Coastal Carolina (18-6, 8-5), which defeated Marshall 76-64 Jan. 29 in Conway, South Carolina.
Savannah Brooks leads the Chanticleers in scoring at 14.5 points per game. Alancia Ramsey averages 12.3 and Kristin Williams 11.3. Williams scored 19, Ransey 10, Mallory Bruce 12 and Jayden Marable 11 in the first meeting with Marshall this season.
Meredith Maier paced the Herd in scoring that day, with 20 points, but the 5-foot-10 junior has missed the last two games with a knee injury. Kellione totaled 11 points.
