HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” A Marshall football record that has stood since 1932 was tied on Saturday when three quarterbacks threw a touchdown in the same game. But it didnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t help coach Charles Huff decide who will be the Thundering HerdÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s starter moving forward.
After missing on five of his first seven throws, Stone Earle hit eight of his last nine and left the game with two touchdowns and 97 yards. Then Braylon Braxton came in and completed 7 of 11 throws for two scores, and Cole Pennington rounded out the bunch by throwing his first career touchdown.
That doesnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t make choosing one to start at Virginia Tech any easier, but Braxton ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” one of two transfers in the bunch ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” said that whomever is tasked with it will be ready.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIt speaks volumes of how we were coached throughout the week and since IÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve been here and StoneÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s been here,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Braxton said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œ(Offensive coordinator Seth) Doege has always prepared each of us like we were the guy, and thereÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s no favoritism in that room. He coaches all of us the same way.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Huff said the plan entering last week was to play Earle in the first half and Braxton in the second, but Marshall extended EarleÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s time on the field due to a lengthy weather delay in the first quarter.
That figures to put Pennington in the third spot on the depth chart, which still features the word ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œorÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ between each of the candidates. Pennington, who started three games for the Herd last year, was also seen warming up as the holder for placekicking, not typically a responsibility handled by a starting quarterback.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œTheir numbers are almost identical,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Huff said, continuing his buttoned-up approach to keeping the position battle a mystery to the public eye.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œStone got the short end of the stick because he had to run out there first not knowing what they were going to do (in coverage),ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Huff said in his weekly press conference. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œBraylon goes in (during the weather delay), and heÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s watching the iPad and knows they arenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t playing any of the coverages we talked about all week, this is what they are doing, so when he gets in, heÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s good, and Cole got to do that same thing.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
The offense, Huff added, was also on a limited playbook against the Seawolves. He said MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s call sheet was scaled back to about six plays for simplicity as the offense got its feet wet in a new scheme.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThere will be a point in time when we need to make a decision and give a guy a chance and a backing,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Huff said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œRight now, weÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve got three capable quarterbacks and weÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve got to be able to get those guys in the game, no different than having three capable running backs.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
In declining to name a starter for SaturdayÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s game against Virginia Tech, the fourth-year coach who has guided the Herd to marquee wins over Power Five programs in consecutive seasons said he feels the same about the quarterbacks today as he did coming out of fall camp.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe have three capable quarterbacks,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ he said.
As the Herd builds a game plan for Virginia Tech, one thing is certain: each player will push the others until a starter is named.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œCompetition brings out the best in all of us, so itÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s cool to hang out with these guys and grow as people and as players and help each other out,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Earle said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œItÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s been a fun couple of months since IÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve been here.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
