As the cooler evenings arrive, contenders separate from pretenders in Tri-State high school football.
Following is a look at some of the weekendÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s matchups:
When: 7 p.m. Friday.
Where: Alumni Stadium.
What to watch:
Chesapeake ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The Panthers rely on a strong offensive line to run the ball out of the wing-T but will need to throw the ball to keep the Pointers defense from stacking the box. Quarterback Jacob Harris and receiver Drew Plantz form a dangerous enough passing combination to handle that assignment.
South Point ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Pointers quarterback Brayden Hanshaw, fresh off a visit to Morehead State University, figures to test a sometimes-leaky Chesapeake defense that must get pressure on him.
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Where: W.C. Hambley Athletic Complex.
What to watch:
Ironton ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Quarterback Braden Schreck accounts for about 270 yards per game. With a 72.7% completion rate and 7.2-yard per carry average, the savvy senior is a threat with his arm and legs.
Pikeville ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” DonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t let the record fool you. The Panthers have played a rugged schedule and are coming off an impressive 28-7 victory over George Rogers Clark. How well the defense plays likely will be key.
When: 7 p.m. Friday.
Where: Pioneer Field.
What to watch:
Lincoln County ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The Panthers are dangerous in the air. Zechariah Miller averages 17.4 yards on 12 catches, three for touchdowns. Lucas Johaim has completed just 35.4% of his passes but is productive when he connects.
Wayne ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Jayden Wayman has stepped up in a backfield hurt by injury. The junior running back averages 119 yards rushing per game and has enough speed to break long runs.
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Where: Jayne Stadium at Morehead State University.
What to watch:
Ashland ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The Tomcats give up 10 points per game and feature one of the strongest defenses in the Tri-State. Adam Frame leads Ashland with 49 tackles, eight for lost yardage, and one interception. Sam Lyons, Cameron Davis and Braxton Jennings have picked off two passes apiece.
Rowan County ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Will Richardson has 10 sacks, 15 tackles for losses, 39 tackles and has forced four fumbles. The 6-foot, 190-pound senior is fast and agile. Ashland will need to account for him on each play.
