CHESAPEAKE, Ohio ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Chesapeake hired Hill to get over the hump.
Marshall University Hall of Famer Carrie Hinkle Hill is the new volleyball coach at Chesapeake High School. The former Thundering Herd softball star is well known as a volleyball coach from her time at Fairland, her alma mater, where she coached at multiple levels.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™m really excited to get back into coaching,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hill said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve been out of it for a little while.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Hill coached buddy league at age 16, worked at the high school, youth and club levels, then took a break in 2017 when her father became ill. In 2019, Hill became a volleyball official. She said all of that prepared her for the Chesapeake job.
Hill inherits a team that went 16-8, including 10-5 in the Ohio Valley Conference last season. In recent seasons, the Panthers have been strong under coach Jamie Shields, finishing just behind Gallia Academy and Fairland, championship teams that have dominated the league.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œGalliaÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s a monster,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hill said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThe have a great youth program. Jamie did an amazing job with the program, with the high school girls, the youth league and everything. She put in a lot of time and effort. The transition is amazing. Having a good foundation certainly makes my job easier.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Hill will be assisted by Brooklynn Roland and Bailey Roland, as well as Julie Lowe and Lorelei Ferguson. That staff will coach a veteran squad featuring seniors Abbey Isaacs, Breanna Scarberry, Erin Wood, Erin Lowe, Abby Iden, Clairynn Romans and Bentley Roland.
Hill said competing against Fairland will ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œtug at my heartstrings because I coached so many of those girls in youth league.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Hill graduated from Marshall in 1997 and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 2022. She said sheÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ll take what she learned playing for legendary Fairland softball coach Jim Bailey and for the Thundering Herd to teach her volleyball players.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI learned work ethic and how to be a good teammate,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hill said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œYoung athletes today can lose sight of those things because of social media and an emphasis on stats.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
