Not much time was needed to whittle the list of undefeated football teams in the Tri-State.
Just four remain. Greenup County is 5-0, Fairland 4-0, Ironton 4-0 and Wayne 2-0. The Dragons and Fighting Tigers play Oct. 11 in Rome Township, Ohio, so one of those teams will take a loss. Both face challenges before that meeting.
Greenup County entertains Ashland on Sept. 27. The Tomcats have beaten the Musketeers 25 consecutive times. Wayne has games with Winfield, Nitro and Herbert Hoover left and all are strong.
The team with the best chance of going through the regular-season unscathed? Probably Ironton, although the Tigers play a sound Columbus Bishop Hartley team Friday, visit Kentucky Class A champion Pikeville Oct. 4 and end the slate with arch-rival Portsmouth Oct. 25.
AMAZING STATS OF THE WEEK: FairviewÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Jace Manning threw for 541 yards and seven touchdowns in a 60-50 victory over Morgan County. PrestonsburgÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s girls soccer player Emily Burchett scored six goals and made two assists in an 8-0 victory over Greenup County.
South Point running back Landon Vance ran 10 times for 84 yards and one touchdown and caught five passes for 98 yards and a TD in a 44-8 triumph over Symmes Valley. Ironton entertains Columbus Hartley in football on Friday. The last time those teams played was in 2012 and the Hawks won 62-6.
Portsmouth beat Gallia Academy 47-0 in football for its first victory in the series since 2016. Spring Valley volleyballÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Avery Ellis was honored Thursday for making her 1,000th career assist. Ironton football is 35-1 at home since 2018. South WebsterÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Addi Claxon made her 1,000th career dig.
FairlandÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Ethan Wall completed 22 of 26 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns in a 49-14 win over Rock Hill. Betsy LayneÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Hanna Hamilton made 35 assists and Jayden Jarrell 35 kills against Lawrence County.
COACH SPEAK: Former Fairland assistant and Lake Erie College coach Todd Perdas was hired as girls basketball coach at Huntington St. Joe.
Wayne softball coach Jessica Mills resigned. Scott Cuthbert of Independence was named the state baseball coach of the year by the WVSSAC. Shady SpringÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Ronnie Olson was awarded a similar honor in boys basketball.
