A state championship was the hot fudge sundae, and the offensive player of the year award was the cherry on top.
Ironton wide receiver Shaun Terry was named the Ohio Division V high school football offensive player of the year Tuesday. Terry helped the Fighting Tigers to a 28-17 victory over Liberty Center in the state title game last week.
Terry, a senior who signed with the University of Missouri, caught 90 passes for 1,595 yards and 23 touchdowns as Ironton went 15-1. He also rushed 22 times for 230 yards and four scores. Terry returned 17 punts for 273 yards and three TDs.
Tigers coach Trevon Pendleton was named coach of the year after leading Ironton to its first state championship since 1989. He shared the award with Jamestown GreeneviewÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Ryan Haines.
Ironton defensive back Josh Johnson, who signed with Penn State, made first-team all-state, as did Tigers defensive lineman Aiden Layne, Fairland wide receiver Jack Hayden and Wheelersburg kicker Cooper Heimbach.
Alex Reese of Martins Ferry and Luke Starkey of Canfield South Range were co-defensive players of the year.
Second-team selections included Ironton quarterback Braden Schreck and offensive lineman Bowen Gossett, Fairland linebacker Quentin Cremeans, Portsmouth running back Chase Heiland and Wheelersburg offensive lineman Landon Evans. Third-team picks included Coal Grove running back Kaden Murphy and Portsmouth defensive lineman Kingston Littlefield.
Earning honorable mention were Fairland wide receiver Keegan Smith, offensive lineman Will Callicoat and defensive lineman Garrett Cornwell; South Point quarterback Brayden Hanshaw; Portsmouth quarterback J.T. Williams, defensive lineman Trevin Brooks and offensive lineman Dylan Sanderlin; Wheelersburg quarterback Braylon Rucker, receiver Kenyon Evans and linebacker Elijah Brown; Meigs receiver Dustin Vance and offensive lineman Aaron Tobin; Coal Grove offensive lineman C.J. Pemberton, linebacker Joey Scarberry and defensive lineman Caden Turner and Ironton linebackers Zayne Williams and Austin Bump.
In Division VI, Rock Hill defensive back Anthony Stamper was named to the first team. Teammates offensive lineman Daniel Medinger and tackle Drew Shug each made the third team.
Honorable-mention picks included Rock Hill linebacker Wyatt Jenkins and Chesapeake quarterback Jacob Harris, running back Drew Plantz, lineman Garrett Napier and wide receiver Ethan Kerns.
In Division VII, South Gallia linebacker Blaine Davison made the first team.
Symmes Valley running back Will Jones and quarterback Dylan Urban earned honorable mention, as did South Gallia running back Layne Wright, defensive back Tanner Sanders and offensive lineman James Sheets and Green linebacker Blake Smith.
