ELIZABETH, W.Va. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Bentley Shirkey of Barboursville was the medalist on Tuesday at the WVGA Callaway Junior Tour golf tournament at the Mingo Bottom Golf Club.
Playing in the 12-under division, Shirkey shot 7-under par 65.
Kerri-Anne Cook of Oceana, West Virginia, played in the 15-18 division and won the girls title with a 3-under 69.
Stephenson qualifies for state open
Josh Stephenson of Huntington qualified on Tuesday for the West Virginia State Open golf tournament.
Stephenson shot 6-over par 77 at The Pines Country Club to finish 11th, five shots behind medalist Lucas Riggleman of Parkersburg.
West wins Appy League all-star game
Brodie Johnston of the Greenville Flyboys was the most valuable player of the Appalachian League baseball all-star game Tuesday, leading the West to a 4-1 victory over the East.
A third baseman who signed with Vanderbilt University, Johnston went 2 for 4 with a home run. Mason Swinney, a Kingsport Axmen standout out of Dallas Baptist University, also homered.
Tri-State Coal Cats outfielder Michael Rodriguez of Bethune-Cookman University, playing for the East, was the only player to reach base three times.
Rodriguez went 2 for 3 with a double, single and walk. The Coal CatsÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ Logan Poteet, a catcher from Vanderbilt, went 0 for 2.
Zach Neville, a Bristol State Liners hurler from Miami (Ohio) University, was the winning pitcher.
