COLUMBUS, Ohio ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Derrick Taylor of South Point won OHSAA Division II state championships in the shot put and discus throws on Saturday.
Taylor threw 185 feet, 6 inches to finish first in the discus. Brandt Morlock of Huber Heights Wayne was second at 177-11. Taylor won the shot with a heave of 65-6, five feet better than runner-up Talon Beichler of Orrville.
Emma Layne, a Marshall University signee from South Point, ran 11.96 to place second in the 100-meter dash. Nyla King of Toledo Central Catholic won in 11.6. Layne ran the 200 in 24.48, second to KingÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s 23.76.
The Pointers girls were third in the 4x100 in 48.46. Hathaway Brown won in 48.10. South PointÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Savannah Perego placed third in the discus at 137-4. WheelersburgÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Ella Hochstetler was second at 139-2. Michaela Stork of Port Clinton won with a fling of 150-6.
South PointÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s girlsÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ 28 points scored is second all-time in a state meet for any Lawrence County program, behind IrontonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s 30 in 1994. The PointersÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ fifth-place finish ties the 1991 Fairland team for the highest in county history. South PointÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s combined girls/boys sixth-place finish, while not an official statistic, made the Pointers program No. 1 in the state.
WheelersburgÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s boys placed fourth in the 4x400 in 3:20.21. Glenville won in 3:16.25.
In Division III, Marshall signee Cameron Burgess of Chesapeake was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 37.35, a mere .03 behind Braxton Barnett of Shenandoah. Burgess ran fourth in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.78. Barnett won in 14.17.
Rock HillÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Nixon Snavely finished fourth in the 1,600 at 4:16.82. Landon Eyre of Whiteoak won in 4:11.13. Snavely was fifth in the 3,200 in 9:29.21. Eyre won in 9:12.46. Rock HillÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Izaak Cox was seventh in the long jump, leaping 21-3.25. Cowin Becker of Northmor won at 22-0.
Baseball
BOYD COUNTY 2, WOLFE COUNTY 1: Brayden Coleman doubled in Alex Maynard with the winning run in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Lions in the KHSAA state high school baseball tournament at Kentucky Proud Park on Sunday in Lexington, Kentucky.
Boyd County (31-5) advances to the semifinals against Louisville Trinity on Friday. The Shamrocks beat Taylor County 6-2 in the quarterfinals. McCracken County (30-8) plays Louisville Pleasure Ridge Park (28-6) in the other semifinal.
The championship game is set for Saturday.
Boyd CountyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s game with Wolfe County was suspended in the fifth inning on Saturday because of storms. The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after Grant Slater was hit by a pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Conner Davis.
The Wolves (24-11), who left 10 runners on base, tied it in the fifth after a 65-minute weather delay.
Jayden Hollen and Kris Evans limited the Lions to three hits, one apiece by Slater, Maynard and Coleman.
Davis walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh but struck out the final batter to earn the win in relief of Brody Biggs.

WHEELERSBURG 10, BALTIMORE LIBERTY UNION 0: The Pirates literally were merciless in their quest for an OHSAA Division V state championship.
Wheelersburg (28-0) clobbered Baltimore Liberty Union 10-0 in a six-inning mercy-rule triumph in the state final on Saturday at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio.
Ava Estep went 2 for 3 with a home run, a triple and two runs batted in as Wheelersburg won its third state championship in four years. Makenzie Mullens was 2 for 3 and drove in two runs. Kaylynn Carter was 2 for 4 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Jalynn Drake went 3 for 4, Mylee Jo Gleim was 2 for 4 and Caiti Boggs hit 2 for 5.
Carter was the winning pitcher, allowing two hits, striking out nine and walking one.
The Pirates scored five runs in the first inning and added one in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
The Lions finished 29-2.

Abby Maynard and Bree Jones singled ahead of Patton.
Taylor Blevins got the win for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on six hits in a complete-game effort. She had five strikeouts.
Emmalynn Kitts, Gracie Preece and Maynard each had three hits for Lawrence County, which moves to the semifinals against Assumption (33-6) on Friday. The Rockets defeated Harrison County 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

Oliver to be in Pirates Hall of Fame
Portsmouth, Ohio, native Al Oliver will be inducted into the Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Fame on Aug. 21.
The Pirates will honor Oliver, Vern Law and Kiki Cuyler on Aug. 22 before their game with the Colorado Rockies.

Oliver, who lives in Portsmouth, spent the first 10 seasons of his 18-year career with the Pirates, ranging from 1968-77, earning three of his seven All-Star nods. He finished second in rookie of the year voting in 1969 and then hit 14 home runs with 64 RBIs for the PiratesÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ World Series-winning team in 1971.
Coal Cats win series
Tri-State split a baseball doubleheader with the Elizabethton River Riders on Saturday to take two of three games in the season-opening series in Tennessee.
Elizabethton won the opener 9-5. Tri-State took the nightcap 5-0 behind a stellar performance by Marshall University pitcher and former Cabell Midland High School star Kenyon Collins, who struck out 10 in four innings, allowed two hits and walked two. At one point, he fanned six consecutive batters.
For his effort, Collins was named Appalachian League pitcher of the week.
The Coal Cats took the lead in the third inning of the second game when Chandler Murray singled in Luke Kosko and Sam Winsett. Ryan Maggy drove in a run in the fifth and Tri-State also had Jorge Gonzalez-Febo cross the plate on a wild pitch. In the seventh, Kosko capped a 3-for-4 performance with a single to score Gonzalez-Febo.
Maggy went 3 for 4 and Murray was 2 for 4. Gonzalez-Febo and Michael Rodriguez each stole two bases.
TuÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™aluau Wolfgramm was 2 for 2 for the River Riders.
In the opener, the resumption of a weather-suspended game from Friday, Rodriguez and Maggy combined for six hits and four runs batted in, but it wasnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t enough as the River Riders took a 4-0 lead and held on.
Jordan Crosland went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Elizabethton.
Andrew Dumont earned the win. Josh Owens went 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Wolfgramm and Brady Thompson each went 2 for 4.
Brayden Thomas took the loss. Maggy was 3 for 4 and knocked in three. Rodriguez went 3 for 5. Sal Mineo and Xavier Rivera each went 2 for 4.
