So, when they needed three runs in the seventh inning, the Coal Cats turned to the assembly line.
Logan Poteet and Chace Chaplin worked consecutive bases-loaded walks to tie the game. Ryan Limerick hit into a forceout but reached first safely, scoring Michael Rodriguez for the winning run in Tri-StateÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s 4-3 defeat of Elizabethton at Jack Cook Field.
The Coal Cats won for the fifth time in their last six outings, on the heels of a six-game skid early in July.
Rodriguez, of Bethune-Cookman, was the lone Coal Cat with multiple hits, going 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
The River Riders (14-21) out-hit the Coal Cats (15-21) 11-6. Their numbers were similar otherwise ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Elizabethton was 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position, and Tri-State was 1 for 8 in that department. Both teams left nine runners on base.
James Woody, of Grambling State, went 4 for 4 to pace Elizabethton. Cole Torbett (Middle Tennessee State), Colin Sloan (Yale) and Nick Hockemeyer (Dallas Richland Junior College) each went 2 for 4.
Evan Holewinski (Kent State) got the win in relief, spinning three innings of four-hit shutout ball. He had three strikeouts and no walks.
David Stich (Angelo State) earned the save with a perfect ninth inning, including two punchouts.
Zane Danielson (Lincoln Land CC) took the loss and blew a save for Elizabethton.
