First proposed in 1923, Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) promised gender equality. Political activist Phyllis Stewart Schlafly, posing as housewife, began campaign against ERA in 1972 when 28 of required 38 states had already ratified. During her campaign seven more states ratified, but another five rescinded it.

Schlafly contended that ERA jeopardized womenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s privileges. Deadlines came and went without ratification.
