On June 12, 2025, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to end federal funds to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” PBS and NPR as we know them locally, public TV and radio ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” 212 to 214 votes following party political lines. The GOP claims that the CPB is some ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œleftistÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ network similar to other outlets, an attempt to silence media generally that do not toe the party line. Welcome to Budapest, Beijing, Moscow or Pyongyang.
Of course, total nonsense. PBS is the only nationwide TV network that offers everything from childrenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s educational (and fun) programs to live broadcasts of cultural events, country to classical concerts, to documentaries on nature and history, and more, all without the headache of commercials. For over two generations, 50 years plus, entertaining and educating Americans. However, I suppose that Sesame Street and NOVA are too ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œwokeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥? It is financed mostly by subscribers, as most viewers and listeners will know with their irritating pledge drives. Our government helps fund some of the gaps.
Perhaps less visible, having a nationwide coverage, CPB is an early warning system in any national emergency. NPR is an integral part of the PRSS (Public Radio Satellite System) working with FEMA, part of the Emergency Alert System. A ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œMorning EditionÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ or ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œMountain Stage,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ interrupted by alerts which may save your life. Same for PBS in the middle of your favorite British soap opera or nature program. PBS and NPR are the only statewide broadcasting network with transmitters across West Virginia, able to reach the most rural areas. Just click on the TV remote for the channel or turn the dial on the radio to any CPB network.
Agreed, if expanding oneÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s knowledge is detrimental to our Republic, even the daily and delightful ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œBirdNoteÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ on NPR about birds, 1.45 minutes daily, then letÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s get rid of PBS and NPR. Of course, birds may be ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œleftists,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ upset about ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œclimate change,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ not right wing enough ? Ignorance is bliss, and a prerequisite for any autocracy.
