BARBOURSVILLE ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The 10th annual ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œStanding Out in Our FieldÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ fundraiser for Marshall UniversityÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine will take place Saturday, Aug. 23.
The event will be held at the Barboursville Park Soccer Complex, 6099 Booten Creek Road in Barboursville. The reception will start at 6 p.m. with dinner and dancing to follow from 7-11 p.m.
Tickets are priced at $175 per person, or $2,000 for a set of eight tickets at a reserved table.
Sponsorships are also available for anyone looking to support the fundraiser. Those interested can find more information online at or call 304-691-1701 to make a reservation.
This yearÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s fundraiser will have a ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œLas VegasÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ theme that will include the band Santa Cruz and a menu composed of various Vegas-themed items like ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œjackpot charcuterie,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œlucky 7 pasta salad,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œgarlic knots of fortune,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œroulette roasted potatoes,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œblack tie filetÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ and ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œlucky espresso chips.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Linda Holmes, associate dean of development and alumni affairs for the School of Medicine, said the fundraiser aims to raise around $150,000 for students to help them reduce their debt after they leave medical school.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œMost students leave the School of Medicine with between $150,000 and $200,000 of debt, so any money that weÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re able to provide them while theyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re medical students helps reduce their debt,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ she said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThatÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s why we do this.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
According to Holmes, students may take out additional money to cover living expenses on top of their cost of education. Whatever scholarships they receive reduce their overall debt.
About 97% of MarshallÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s medical students are on scholarship. The idea behind ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œStanding Out in Our FieldÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ is to help out as many students as possible, but they can only help those who fill out their FAFSA to show that they have a financial need.
In the years that ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œStanding Out in Our FieldÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ has been held, it has ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œgrown exponentially,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ according to Holmes.
Initially, the school wanted a signature event to raise scholarship money for the students and hosted a food and wine pairing event. This version was smaller in scale, but every year, it has grown and has proven to be financially successful, according to Holmes. This year, they expect to see about 450 to 500 attendees.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œAs people have attended, we have continued to grow just through our attendance. It is something that people look forward to,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Holmes said.
While many people have been to every ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œStanding Out in Our FieldÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ event, there are always new faces as well.
In addition to the fundraiser, the School of Medicine also will host a homecoming weekend Sept. 12-13 for alumni to enjoy a reunion. More information about this event can be found at .
Holmes said this will be a laid-back event that gives people the ability to enjoy themselves in a ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œrelaxed atmosphere, with great food, an easy-to-access venue and for a good cause.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
