HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Rain or shine, the cityÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s 5th annual Juneteenth celebration began Thursday with a Historical Neighborhood Stroll.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the day the news reached Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in the Confederacy.
The stroll began at MammusÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ Kitchen and Catering at 1525 9th Ave. and walked through local landmarks, including the Carter G. Woodson Memorial Statue ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” the father of Black history ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” the Memphis Tennessee Garrison House and the A.D. Lewis Center, before ending back at MammusÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ for refreshments and activities.
Friday evening at 6 p.m. is the Juneteenth Sparkle and Shine Soiree at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 1429 6th Ave.
The main Juneteenth celebration will be on Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at Ritter Park.
