HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA Area Inc. announced in December that it would be going plastic free starting New YearÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Day.
This means customers have to bring their own bag, purchase a reusable one or opt for a free cardboard box.
Alissa Stewart-Sparks, president and CEO of Goodwill KYOWVA, said that this move to plastic-free has been in the works for the past six to eight months.
There are 10 stores within the Goodwill KYOWVA network and 154 separate Goodwill organizations in the United States and Canada.
Each Goodwill group is run separately so the decision to stop using plastic bags was made locally for these 10 stores.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œItÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s the right thing to do. We are always trying to figure out different ways to be able to make our carbon footprint less, and this is one way that we can help with those efforts,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Stewart-Sparks said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe do operate the cityÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s largest recycling center, and it didnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t make sense that we were recycling so much and still offering plastic bags that pollute the landfills.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
She said that the transition has been well received so far.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI think people are starting to understand the importance of being sustainable, reducing your carbon footprint, and making sure that we leave this to our children a better place to live, and this is one small way that will make a big impact,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ she said.
She said that they will sell reusable bags for purchase in the story at an affordable price and that theyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ll come in a variety of sizes.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re actually getting some that are going to have some really cute designs,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ she said.
