HUNTINGTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Twenty one units at the Garden Park Apartments in the Pea Ridge area were affected by a fire Tuesday morning, and two people were taken to the hospital.
The Barboursville Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire with entrapment around 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.
One occupant and one injured Barboursville VFD firefighter were transported by Cabell County EMS, the fire department . While both sustained potential life-altering injuries, according to the post, they were both stable as of Tuesday morning.
According to Lee Davis, a lieutenant with Barboursville VFD, the firefighter was injured when a brick wall collapsed on him.
Green Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Ohio River Road Volunteer Fire Department, Huntington Fire Department, Ona Volunteer Fire Department, Milton Volunteer Fire Department, Culloden Volunteer Fire Department and Hurricane Fire and Rescue also responded, according to the post.
Two staff members and two volunteers from the American Red Cross were also on site helping people.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re helping residents of the full list of the 21 apartments,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ said Amber Whitley, executive director of the American Red Cross Central Appalachia Region. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve already helped five clients and weÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ve got volunteers in the process right now working to get ahold of the other remaining 16 clients.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Barboursville VFD Fire Chief Andrew Frazier said a cause has not been identified yet and the fire is under investigation.
Julia Hightower, one of the residents displaced by the fire, said Tuesday afternoon that she woke up around 1 a.m. thinking she smelled something burnt. Eventually she realized it was a fire, and she said she immediately put her dogs in her car. She then ran back inside, not knowing what she was going to grab, but when she came back out, she said the building was fully involved and she had to move her car.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œSo my initial reaction was, how am I gonna get through this setback and everything, but I have an amazing support system. My church family immediately jumped in and was willing to support me,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Hightower said. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™m OK because I know that the Lord has got me in his hands and is gonna help me through it.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Hightower is a member of Christ Temple Church. She works at Discovery Tree and Autism Services Center in Huntington. A was set up for her and another resident, .
Lakota Jones also lives in the burned building. While her unit wasnÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t damaged by the fire, she said she and her partner Ethan Goldy still wonÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t be able to stay there.
They were nearly asleep when they heard someone yelling and banging on doors, Jones said. Eventually, she said, someone knocked on their door and told them they needed to evacuate because of the fire. They grabbed their cat and dog before heading to their car.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œJust exhausted, really,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Jones said of how she was feeling Tuesday afternoon. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIt was just a lot to handle and it was dead of night, so everybody was like half asleep and it just felt like a nightmare really.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
TheyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™d just moved, she said, so the pair is staying at their old apartment and are hoping to relocate to a different unit at Garden Park.
