In recent months, the FBI has been investigating a group known as 764 and is now sounding the alarm for parents of children old enough to operate electronic devices.
The organization is composed of a loosely connected global network that the FBI claims will ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œmethodically target and exploit minors and other vulnerable individuals.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
In a continuation of their warning, the FBI explains that ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œit is imperative the public be made aware of the risk and the warning signs exhibited by victims. These networks use threats, blackmail and manipulation to coerce or extort victims into producing, sharing, or live-streaming acts of self-harm, animal cruelty, sexually explicit acts and/or suicide. The footage is then circulated among members of the network to continue to extort victims and exert control over them.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Blackmail may include swatting, doxing and other criminal behaviors including video and photo proof of illegal activities and violence towards others or animals, or even the production of Child Sexual Abuse Material. The FBI warns these activities may also include demands for self-harm.
According to the FBI, the network operates online through ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œsocial media sites, gaming platforms and mobile applications commonly used by young people. Many threat actors systematically target underage females, but anyone ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” juveniles, adults, males and females ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” can be targeted. Victims are typically between the ages of 10 and 17 years old, but the FBI has seen some victims as young as 9.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
The FBI advises individuals to practice caution while posting personal identifying information online. They also recommend monitoring online activity.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œAlthough seemingly innocuous when posted or shared, the images and videos can provide malicious actors an abundant supply of content to exploit and manipulate or alter for criminal activity,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ the FBI warned. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œVictims are vulnerable to embarrassment, harassment, extortion, or continued long-term re-victimization.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Warning signs in youth include sudden behavior signs, changes in eating and sleeping patterns, family pets being harmed or showing uncharacteristic avoidance, long sleeves in hot weather, patterned wounds or scars, anonymous gifts, a new online friend that stokes infatuation or fear, isolation, a sudden change in appearance and more.
In cases of blackmail and the potential distribution of explicit content of minors, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children provides a free service known as Take It Down, which helps minor victims, even if they are now an adult, remove or stop the online sharing of nude, or sexually explicit online content.
