WAYNE ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Confirmed cases of pertussis, also called whooping cough, were reported at a second school in Wayne County.
According to a letter from Wayne County Schools Superintendent Todd Alexander, ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThe Wayne County School District has received notification from the local health department regarding a small number of confirmed pertussis (whooping cough) cases at Buffalo Middle School (in Kenova).ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Fewer than five cases have been identified, according to the letter. The public health definition of an outbreak is two or more cases from different households with symptom onset within a 42-day timeframe.
Fewer than five confirmed cases of pertussis had also been reported at Ceredo-Kenova Middle School in Ceredo, according to a letter from Alexander earlier this month.
In both situations, Alexander said in the letters that the district and school nurses were working with the health department; health officials were contacting people who had been in close contact with a confirmed case; and the district was following guidelines/recommendations from health officials, including excluding individuals diagnosed with pertussis from school for at least five days after beginning antibiotic treatment.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a respiratory illness caused by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis, which can ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œspread easily from person to person through the air,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ and the illness is generally treated with antibiotics.
