MILTON ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” The new Local Exchange Market is wrapping up its first year with three more events lined up: Aug. 28, Sept. 25 and Oct. 30.
ItÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s a farmers market held in the evening on the last Thursday of every month from 6-9 p.m. from May to October near the New Heights Church off of North Main Street in Milton.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWe do it on a Thursday night because we want it to not compete with other Saturday markets. So because of that, we get to all come together, so thereÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s more of a community building aspect for all the producers in our area,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ said Shayla Lucas, market organizer.
There are usually around 20 vendors, food trucks, face painting, henna tattoos and live music. There are three different music groups and each one gets an hour time slot. Heartwood Coffee, housed inside the New Heights Church, is also open during the market.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI wanted an event that was really mainly focused on community building so that we could all come together and really be part of a producer community at least once a month. We all have our dedicated other locations that we sell at but this opens it up to really bringing everybody together face to face to be around our community every month,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Lucas said.
Anyone interested in selling at the market can contact Lucas through the Local Exchange or . She says she is always looking for more vendors, particularly creators whose work shows craftsmanship and skill, but does want to keep the focus on farmers.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œThe cool thing is that itÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s not a typical farmers market, you kind of make your rounds and then you go home, but ours is different because people enjoy hanging out. They get to stay, theyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re eating, they are socializing with each other. You look around and you donÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™t see people on their phones, like theyÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™re actually talking. So itÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s a really good environment to enjoy,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ she said.
She is considering finding a way to move the market to an indoor space for the winter months.
