LEWISBURG, West Virginia ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Greenbrier Valley Theatre will present "A Closer Walk with Patsy Cline" by Dean Regan from Aug. 29 through Sept. 13.
Kermit Medsker made his musical directing debut at Greenbrier Valley Theatre in the summer of 1993, according to a release announcing Medsker's return to the theater.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œCathey Sawyer hired me for the summer and the first show was The Pirates of Penzance,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Medsker said in the release. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œIn those days, out-of-town actors were housed by locals. GVT was non-union and the casts were mainly community folk with a smattering of professionals.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
Medsker returned to GVT for the summer of 1995 and was part of the team in 1998 when plans were developed for the new theater, which opened in 2000. He served as an actor, music director, worked on set designs, and occasionally directed nonmusical productions. He became the resident music director in 2013 and filled this role until 2020.
Medsker has experience working with Katie Deal, who plays the lead in the production.
ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI first worked with Katie Deal in 2013 when she was the leading lady in Dracula the Rock Opera," Medsker said in the release. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œI am thrilled to be working with her again. She has toured with this show several times and does her own tributes to country singers, including Patsy Cline.ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥
According to the release, Medsker is excited to have some familiar faces join him in the band. Local musicians Butch White (drums), Don Drummer (pedal steel), and Mandy Knipe (bass) have all worked with Medsker before in GVT productions. Also joining them is Dan Bailey (guitar) from Beckley. Â
Medsker is proud of the growth of theatre and excited about being back.
"Since 1993, I have watched GVT grow into a professional Actors' Equity theatre with an extensive children's theatre,ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Medsker said in the release. ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œWhile maintaining a commitment to involving community members in productions."
