CHAMPIONSHIP: The Sugarwood ladiesÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™ golf league will represent this area in the West Virginia Golf AssociationÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s WomenÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s Intra-State Championship on July 28 at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington. Five area golf teams played four matches at Riviera Golf Course, Creekside Golf Course, Esquire Golf Course, and Guyan Golf and Country Club this spring. Members of the teams who played in the last match on Saturday, June 21, at Riviera Golf Course are: Sugarwood (#1) ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Annie Wise, Joan Muriale, Paulette Mabry, and Peggy Trocin; Esquire (#2) ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Colleen Thew, Janet Fisher, Alice Williams, and Karen Riggio; Creekside (#3) Mendy Bays, Cindy McDonie, Lisa Moore, and Doris Wheeler; Riviera ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Kay Ratcliff, Marsha Slater, Sharon Chandler, and Edna Meisel; and Guyan ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” Jean Biggs, Sally Bogers, and Rosalene Fox. Medalists for the matches were Mendy Bays, Rachel Brickett, Lisa Moore, and Janet Fisher.
ACADEMY: Yesterday, June 26, Chloe Smalley, a 2025 Huntington High School graduate, was inducted into the U.S. Naval Academy Class of 2029, marking the beginning of six challenging weeks of basic midshipman training during Plebe Summer. Approximately 1,200 candidates are selected for this freshman class. During this time, plebes have no access to television, movies, the internet, or music and have restricted access to cell phones ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥” only permitted to make two calls during the six weeks. The pressure and rigor of Plebe Summer is carefully designed to help plebes prepare for their first academic year at the Naval Academy and the four years of challenge that awaits them. ChloeÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s dad and mother, Jason and RaShawna Smalley, and her grandparents, Jerry and Rhonda Smalley, traveled to Annapolis, Maryland, to observe this momentous ceremony.
LEADERSHIP: Olivia Flowers, a junior at Cabell Midland High School in the fall, represented CMHS at the Hugh OÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™Brien West Virginia Youth Leadership Seminar (HOBY) at Fairmont State University from June 13-15. Every spring more than 9,000 high school sophomores are selected to attend their state seminars and participate in hands-on activities, meet leaders in their state, and explore personal leadership skills. While at this seminar, Olivia was chosen to attend on scholarship for a week next summer at the international HOBY World Congress. Olivia is the daughter of Cole Flowers, a 1993 Barboursville High School graduate, and the granddaughter of John and Donna Flowers.
MEMORIAL: Enjoy a musical evening with friends of Janice Chandler Gold on Saturday evening, June 28, at 7 p.m. at the Huntington Museum of Art, 2033 McCoy Road, Huntington. Several groups — Renaissance, Gold’n Girls, Woodland Warblers, Beverly Hills Methodist Chancel Choir, Huntington East High School Alumni — and several individuals will be among the friends of Janice Chandler Gold providing special music (both Broadway and sacred) in her memory. There is no admission charge for the event but envelopes will be available to accept donations for the scholarship fund. VBS: A ÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥œTrue NorthÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥ Vacation Bible School will be offered at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 5700 U.S. 60 East, in cooperation with St. Paul Lutheran ChurchÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s congregation from July 7-11 from 6-8 p.m. Food, Bible stories, crafts, music, games and science activities for children through age 10 will be available. DINNER: The Greater Barboursville Community OutreachÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s free dinner is offered Saturday, June 28, from 3-4:15 p.m. at the Barboursville Senior Center, 721 Central Ave. The menu will include Midway hot dogs, slaw, fruit salad, chips, cookies, and assorted drinks. Mayor Chris Tatum is the host for this meal. Everyone is welcome.
CANCELED: The Westmoreland WomanÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s ClubÃÛÁÄÖ±²¥™s rummage and hot dog sale that was scheduled for Friday, June 27, has been canceled because of the extreme heat predicted on that date.
